A Review: Personality and Perception

Last week, i have discussed Personality and Perception and from these topics, we have to remember several important points that we maybe useful to us as we go through life.

1. Personality is multidimensional. As such, our focus must be balanced among all these features. Few of us overly PAMPERED physical dimension, always focusing on the features that people see. What we have to remember is that, while physical is important, it must not overshadow other aspects of our personality like intellecual, social, spiritual and emotional. To do so would produce person who is not balance: beautiful but intellectually bankrupt; handsome but without good character; beautiful face but emotionally retarded; or handsome but socially inadequate.

2. Person as we can see is active in process. He is either changed by situations or he changes the situation. In essence, he could be a passive recipient of the environmental stimulus or an active agent of environmental change. If negative situations arise, one can react in two ways: 1. he can be so angry or be as negative as the situation or 2. he may turn the situation into positive one.

3. There are several personality characteristics that we may see on in organizations. They are as follows:
a. Locus of control- this is our ability to be the master of what happens to us. It's either we completely control our actions (internal) or other people or cicumstances control what happens to us (external)

On Perception

We define perception as one's interpretation of his sensation. The moment one gives his own meaning to what he saw, listened to, or felt, he is actually giving his perception. Our perception of others maybe influenced by several factors including our own biases, prejudices and yes our subjective feeling towards the person.

That would somehow show that our perception is somehow affected by our personal involvement or our desire of involvement with the situation, thing, or person.

What's wrong with this? It could be very normal. However, it seems to be limiting the level of our objectivity when we perceive situation, thing or the person within the context of our personal, subjective meaning. The next time that we are given the opportunity to give meaning, be sure we are looking at the objective reality rather than be manipulated by our subjectivity.

Reporting

Since i already grouped you for the reporting ask, i deemed it appropriate to remind you of the reporting guidelines i have set during our orientation day:

1. Your group will be responsible to research concepts related to your topic.
2. You will be responsible in providing printed hand-out to me and an uploaded hand out through our yahoo group for your classmates BEFORE the day of your report. That would assure me that you are ready and prepared for the task. The hand out to be given to me must include the references you have used (books, magazines, journals or website address).
3. Be sure to consult me regarding the contents of your report before finalizing it for the presentation.
4. You are REQUIRED to be in BUSINESS ATTIRE when reporting.
5. The presentation must be in Powerpoint and you are responsible to coordinate with the MIS staff for the COMPASS use.
6. You must report on the day assigned to you. Failure to do so would mean difficulty on your part to pass my subject. Unless of course, for some emergency or valid reasons.

Any question regarding these guides must be directed to me.

Thank you.

Blogging

I have read some journal entries and i think i need to reiterate some points:

First, your journal entry, at least the official blog entry intended for HBO, may contain classroom experiences (what happened inside the classroom and the behavior you have observed), learning insights you have gained (not the notes or slide presentation i had), and your personal reflection on these learnings.

Second, be sure you have published your entry so that it can be read by me primarily and the rest of the class (read: world).

Third, you have to put your real name in your profile so that i can give the credit to where it is due.

Thank you.

Welcome to my new batch of HBO students. This blog site is intended for extra instructions and curricular insights i wish to imparts to you given our limited time inside the classroom.

Practically, i have met all of you and have oriented you with the rules and regulations i usually ask my students to comply. Basically it boils down to basic concept: YOU SHOULD STUDY for your existence in the DCLC premises is essentially motivated by your desire to learn more and grow academically.

It was a nice week meeting you for i have seen eagerness and enthusiasm in your faces to learn. Although i must admit that i get easily annoyed when i discovered that there are students in a certain class who did not do their reading assignment. I hope the same situation will not happen again.

I was amused when some students perceived to be "terror", "masungit" when in fact i consider myself a very liberal teacher. Perhaps because i don't smile at people easily, or perhaps it is because of my physical feature which paint me to be like that. But i guess you alreay realized that being human goes beyond physical structure. Remember overt and covert behavior? That our knowledge of human is not complete without us discovering the hidden features of an individual.

Some students may find my requirements especially the online journal to be too taxing. But some also find it to be exciting as it is their first time to be electronically linked with other people and their instructor. What i wish to assure you is that all these requirements are not whimsically made. It is based on the belief that one has to develop several skills, attitude and discipline which can only be accomplished by providing you with learning opportunies and innovative avenues where you be YOU.

I hope you'll enjoy the rest of the semester.
